Car finance maths: instalments, deposits and balloons
Vehicle finance is where small print does the most damage. Understand the moving parts before the dealership explains them for you.
Dealer finance versus a personal loan
Bank and dealer vehicle finance secures the loan against the car, so rates run lower. but adds conditions: comprehensive insurance, fixed balloon payments at the end, and repossession rights. A personal loan for the same car is unsecured and slightly pricier, but makes you a cash buyer with negotiating power and no asset at risk. This calculator models the personal-loan route; use it as leverage against any dealer quote.
The term trap
Cars depreciate; loans shouldn't outlive them. An 84-month term on a 6-year-old vehicle means paying instalments long after its value collapses. a state called negative equity, where selling the car can't clear the loan. Keep the term inside the car's realistic useful life: 48 to 60 months for used vehicles, at most 72 for new ones.
Balloons: the low instalment illusion
A balloon payment (say 30% due at the end) cuts the monthly instalment dramatically. and quietly loads the interest cost to the back of the contract. If a quote seems too cheap monthly, ask one question: "What's the total amount I'll repay, including the balloon?" Compare that figure here, not the instalment.
What this calculator excludes
Initiation fees, service fees and the mandatory comprehensive insurance that secured finance requires. Add roughly 1 to 2% of the loan amount mentally, then negotiate the car's price with your pre-calculated number in hand. the finance office negotiates harder against unprepared buyers.
