Personal loans explained: from R1,000 to R350,000
The workhorse of South African consumer credit. one lump sum, fixed instalments, clear total cost. Here's how to get a good one.
How a personal loan works
You borrow a fixed amount. anything from R1,000 to R350,000 depending on the lender and your profile. and repay it in equal monthly instalments over 6 to 84 months. The rate is usually fixed for the term, so your instalment never moves. Interest is charged on the reducing balance: early in the term you pay mostly interest, late in the term mostly principal.
What determines your interest rate
Lenders price on risk. The big inputs: your credit score and payment history, income stability, existing debt load, and the amount and term you choose. The legal ceiling for unsecured credit is repo rate + 21% per year; prime borrowers land far below it, thin or damaged files approach it. This spread is exactly why comparing at least three offers matters. on a R100,000 loan over 48 months, two percentage points is worth over R5,000.
The fees nobody advertises
Beyond interest, expect a once-off initiation fee and a monthly service fee (capped by regulation at R69 per month). Reputable lenders deduct these transparently and disclose total repayment upfront. If a quote hides fees behind a low advertised rate, ask for the total cost figure. by law they must give it to you.
Term maths: shorter is cheaper, longer is easier
A longer term lowers the monthly instalment but raises the total interest paid. sometimes dramatically. Example: R50,000 at 22% costs about R1,560/month over 48 months (ยฑR75,000 total) versus R1,170/month over 84 months (ยฑR98,000 total). The "cheaper-feeling" option costs R23,000 more. Using a personal loan wisely
The smart uses: consolidating expensive short-term debt, funding assets or education, covering planned large expenses. The poor uses: funding lifestyle gaps, gambling, servicing other debt with no plan to change the pattern. A personal loan is a tool. the outcome depends on what you build with it.
